Gangotri Ji Temple - Religious Shrine of Goddess Ganga Gangotri is known as the source of River Ganga and the temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is the seat of Goddess Ganga which is situated in the heart of uttarkashi district in the sta te of Uttarakhand. Gangotri Temple is a holy place very close to Indo - Tibetan border. It is situated at a distance of 300 km from Dehradun, 250 km From Rishikesh with at an elevation of 3048 mts above the sea level. The beautiful temple was built by a Gorkha Commander in 18th Century. Gaumukh Glacier is the origin point of Ganga River which is offered a short 19 km trek from Gangotri.
