Gangotri is known as the source of River Ganga and the temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is the seat of Goddess Ganga which is situated in the heart of uttarkashi district in the sta te of Uttarakhand. Gangotri Temple is a holy place very close to Indo - Tibetan border. It is situated at a distance of 300 km from Dehradun, 250 km From Rishikesh with at an elevation of 3048 mts above the sea level. The beautiful temple was built by a Gorkha Commander in 18th Century. Every year thousands of devotees take part in the yatra from the country and the other different parts of world. Gaumukh Glacier is the origin point of Ganga River which is offered a short 19 km trek from Gangotri. Gangotri has a majestic picturesque beauty and the amazing snow capped Himalayan peaks attract the tourists. The flowing water of River Bhagirathi adds the charm of the place. Apart from a religious place it is also offered the beautiful trek route like – Tapovan, Bhojwasa, Gaumukh Glacier, Gangotri National Park, Shivling peak etc.
The temple opens on the day of Akashya Tritiya which is fall in the last week of April or First week of May and the temple close after two days of Diwali on the day of Bhai Duj. May and June are the best season for visit and again September to October are the best. Due to heavy snowfall, when the roads are not accessible to reach Gangotri, then the idol of Goddess Ganga is transferred to Mukhba Village. According to the legend it is believed that the temple has a great story. King Bhagirathi did a serious penance to come down the Goddess Ganga on the earth for the salvation of his Ancestors. After 1000 years the king Bhagirathi was able to agree to come down on the earth. To the save the mankind Lord Shiva was agreed to lock Goddess Ganga in his luscious. Gangotri is one of the four Chardham Yatra of Uttarakhand. Alcohol and Non Vegetarian foods are not allowed here in Around Gangotri Temple.
